Every panel in the A-4E's cockpit is labelled either by function (TACAN, AFCS) or by part number (APN-153, ASN-41), which is why the cockpit looks like it's missing half its systems. It isn't.
Panel positions and every switch detent below are read from the mod's own source — clickabledata.lua tags each control with its physical location, and the system scripts declare the exact mode names.
Six zones, not thirty panels
The cockpit divides into six regions: the main instrument panel in front of you, and each console split into forward, middle, and aft thirds. Learn the zone a system lives in and you stop hunting.
The single most useful thing on this map: the BDHI switch — the one that decides which navigation source drives your needle — is not with the navigation gear. It's on the armament panel, dead centre.
clickabledata.lua (LEFT/MID/RIGHT × FWD/MID/AFT). The radar scope and APC tag as forward-left, meaning they sit at the left edge of the main panel where it meets the console. Numbers are the NATOPS callouts the mod's authors used.- Navigation

Three boxes with no panel to find
- AN/ARN-25 ADF — no panel of its own. It's a detent on the UHF radio's mode switch. Select it there and a BDHI needle points at the station.
- CP-741/A bombing computer — zero cockpit presence. It silently takes slant range from the radar and settings from the armament panel, and moves the release cue.
- AN/APN-153 doppler — has a mode switch and a memory light, but no display. Its only job is feeding the ASN-41.
The navigation chain
Almost every "my nav is broken" moment in this aircraft comes from one fact: three separate systems compete for the same needle, and a switch on the armament panel decides which one wins. Here's the whole chain.
System by system
AN/APN-153 + AN/ASN-41
Doppler radar and navigation computer — the aircraft's dead-reckoning nav. Learn this pair first; it's the heart of the jet and the least intuitive thing in it.
- Doppler to
STBYto spin up, thenLANDover ground orSEAover water — the sea setting compensates for a moving surface. - ASN-41 to
STBY. - Set present position latitude and longitude on the push-to-set knobs — push the knob in, then rotate. Everything downstream is only as good as this entry.
- Set magnetic variation for your theatre.
- Set wind speed and direction if you know them. This is what the computer falls back on when the doppler loses lock.
- Set destination lat/lon for D1, and D2 if you want a second one. Slew knobs give you fine adjustment.
- ASN-41 to
D1(orD2) to steer to that destination. - BDHI selector to
NAVCMPTRso the needle actually shows it.
OFF and nothing is pre-loaded. A warm or air start hands you the doppler already in LAND and the ASN-41 in D1.

AN/ARN-52 TACAN
Bearing and distance to a ground station or a tanker. Your independent cross-check on the dead-reckoning nav.
- Dial the channel on the 10s and 1s wheels.
- Mode to
T/Rfor bearing plus distance.RECis receive-only, so bearing but no DME. A/Ais air-to-air — range to another TACAN-equipped aircraft, which is how you find the tanker.- BDHI selector to

REC you get a bearing and an empty distance drum, which reads like a broken DME. It isn't — you're just not transmitting.
AN/APG-53A radar
Ground mapping, terrain avoidance, and the slant range that makes computed bombing work.
- Mode switch to
STBYand let it warm, then pick your mode:SRCHfor ground mapping,TCfor terrain clearance,AGfor air-to-ground ranging. - Set antenna tilt on the radar control panel — this is what most often makes a scope look empty.
- On the scope itself, work brilliance, gain and detail until you get a usable picture. Drop the filter plate in bright light.
- Range switch and terrain-clearance switch are over on the armament panel, and change the presentation.
- In
TC, set the obstacle-tone volume — the warning is audio.
AG. Leave it in SRCH and your release cue is working from nothing.
AFCS
Automatic Flight Control System — the autopilot. Attitude hold is the base; heading and altitude hold stack on top.
- Standby switch on first, and let it run through warm-up. It will not engage straight from cold.
- Trim the aircraft out properly, then Engage. Attitude hold is what you get.
- Want heading hold? Set the heading with the pull-to-set knob, then flip Heading Select.
- Want altitude hold? Level off first, then flip the Altitude switch.
- Stability augmentation — the yaw damper — is independent of all of the above and worth leaving on.
APC
Approach Power Compensator — an auto-throttle that flies angle of attack for you on approach. The carrier pilot's best friend.
- Set the temperature switch for ambient conditions —
STDcovers most days. - Power to
STBYon the way down the pattern. - Configure the aircraft: gear down, flaps down, on speed.
- Power to
ENGAGE. The throttle now works itself to hold your AoA — fly the ball with attitude and let it handle power.
Avionics order on a cold start
Once you have electrical power and the engine running, the avionics want roughly this order — earlier items feed later ones:
- UHF radio on (right console, middle) — you need the ground crew and ATC.
- APN-153 doppler to
STBY, thenLAND. It needs the longest to settle, so start it early. - ASN-41 to
STBY; enter present position, magnetic variation, wind, and your destinations. - TACAN channel and mode set.
- BDHI selector to whichever source you want on the needle.
- Radar to
STBY. - Radar altimeter on, warning height set.
- APR-25 and chaff power on if anyone's shooting.
- AFCS standby on so it's warm by the time you want it.
- ASN-41 to
D1once you're rolling.
Gladiator NXT EVO — four layers
This is VKB's own template for the NXT EVO, filled in once per layer. Buttons 28 (F2) and 29 (F3) are the modifiers, giving four layers — the same scheme the community gamepad chart uses. They sit on the base beside the analog wheel, so your left hand shifts layers while your right stays on the grip. F1 (27) is left deliberately spare.
Greyed boxes do nothing on that layer; amber boxes are the modifier you're holding. The 8-way POV hat carries every layer's shifted functions, because it's the one control you can reach without changing grip — and its centre press is VKB's hardware Mode switch, so it isn't bindable in DCS.

Setting the modifiers up
- Declare both in Controls → Modifiers, device = Gladiator, buttons 28 and 29. For layer 4, add both to the same binding row — DCS supports two modifiers per bind.
- Both must be momentary. If either is set as a latching toggle in VKB Configurator, the layers stick on.
- Leave 28 and 29 with no action of their own. A button still fires its own binding while serving as a modifier, which produces ghost inputs on every layer shift.
- A modified binding takes precedence over the unmodified one on the same control, so there's no need to clear base assignments.
- Buttons 21 and 22 are left blank on every layer. Fill them once you know which functions you actually reach for.
Why layers 2 to 4 are nearly empty
The gamepad chart had to hide AFCS, APC, speedbrake, flaps, wheel brake, antenna tilt and weapon function behind modifiers because it only had about fourteen inputs. The EVO has 29 buttons, two encoders and an analog wheel, so all of those live on the base layer where they belong.
Resist filling the empty slots. Keep layer 4 for jobs you do with the aircraft stable and slow — hooking to the cat, canopy, NVGs — because holding both base buttons commits your left hand and takes it off the throttle.
